Top Paint Colors for 2026 and the 5 Best Painting Companies in Huntsville, AL
Paint is the cheapest thing you can change about a house and the first thing a buyer reacts to. It is also the one improvement where the wrong choice is worse than doing nothing — Zillow's 2026 buyer research found a single badly colored bathroom knocking almost $8,000 off what people were willing to offer.
So here is the whole picture in one place: every major brand's 2026 Color of the Year with real hex codes, what the resale research actually says (and where it is weaker than the headlines suggest), how all of it translates to a red-brick house in Madison County, and five Huntsville painting companies I would actually call, with their BBB records and phone numbers.
The 2026 palette went warm and deep. Sherwin-Williams picked Universal Khaki SW 6150, a mid-tone warm neutral. Benjamin Moore picked Silhouette AF-655, a burnt-umber near-black. Behr picked Hidden Gem N430-6A, a smoky jade. Pantone went the other direction entirely with Cloud Dancer 11-4201, a soft white.
Dark beat light at resale. In Zillow's 2026 study, a chocolate-brown bedroom carried the largest premium at +$2,277 over white. A bold red bathroom carried the largest penalty at −$7,971.
Sage green was the only safe-everywhere color — the one shade that ranked top-tier in every room tested.
Painting a Huntsville house runs about $1.10 to $2.70 per square foot, inside or out, before materials. A 2,000 sq ft exterior lands around $2,300 to $5,500.
Five companies worth calling: Shattuck Painting (since 1973), Woods Painting & Home Improvements (since 1985), CertaPro Painters of Huntsville, Universal Painting & Restoration, and Luxe Home Painting.
What are the 2026 paint colors of the year?
Thirteen brands named a 2026 Color of the Year. Eight of them have codes you can walk into a store and buy, and those are the eight worth knowing. Every swatch below is the manufacturer's published color rendered at its hex value.
Screens lie. Every one of these will read differently on your wall than it does here, and differently again at 7 a.m. than at 5 p.m. Buy a sample pot or a peel-and-stick swatch and live with it for three days before you commit to twelve gallons.
The full 2026 list
| Brand | Color | Code | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sherwin-Williams | Universal Khaki | SW 6150 | Warm mid-tone neutral with a yellow undertone |
| Benjamin Moore | Silhouette | AF-655 | Burnt umber cut with charcoal — a near-black brown, LRV 8 |
| Behr | Hidden Gem | N430-6A | Smoky jade green with cool blue undertones, LRV 14 |
| Valspar | Warm Eucalyptus | 8004-28F | Muted green with warm undertones |
| PPG | Secret Safari | PPG1110-4 | Yellow-green botanical shade |
| Glidden | Warm Mahogany | PPG1060-7 | Warm red-brown, LRV 8 |
| Dunn-Edwards | Midnight Garden | DE5657 | Deep muted garden green |
| Dutch Boy | Melodious Ivory | 313-2DB | Soft warm ivory neutral |
| Clark+Kensington | Hazelnut Crunch | 09A-5 | Earthy mid-tone neutral |
| California Paints | Cactus Valley | — | Rich organic green |
| C2 Paint | Epernay | #639 | Soft ochre |
| Krylon | Matte Coffee Bean | — | Deep brown (spray) |
| Pantone | Cloud Dancer | 11-4201 | Soft, lofty white — the outlier of the group |
Read the list top to bottom and the pattern is obvious. Eleven of the thirteen are warm, earthy or deep. The gray era that ran from roughly 2014 to 2022 is over, and the industry has committed to that in unison. If your house is wall-to-wall cool gray, it now reads as dated in a way it did not two years ago.
Color trends do not move home values on their own. What they move is how new a house feels. A buyer walking through two similar homes in Jones Valley will describe the cool-gray one as "needs updating" and the warm-neutral one as "move-in ready" without being able to tell you why. That perception gap is worth more than the $600 of paint that caused it.
Which paint colors actually add money at resale?
Zillow's behavioral science team ran the most-cited study on this. They showed more than 4,200 recent and prospective buyers images of identical rooms painted in different colors and measured preference, tour intent and willingness to pay. Here is what came back.
| Room | Best color | Premium vs. white | Worst result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Chocolate brown (Turkish Coffee SW 6076) | +$2,277 | Ochre yellow |
| Living room | Pale blue (Tradewind SW 6218) | +$1,723 | Ochre yellow |
| Kitchen | Charcoal gray (Peppercorn SW 7674) | +$1,373 | Ochre yellow |
| Bathroom | Sage green (Liveable Green SW 6176) | Highest buyer interest | Bold red: −$7,971 |
| Bathroom | — | — | Blush pink: −$6,013 |
Three things jump out of that table, and the third one is the one nobody writes about.
- Dark won. This runs directly against the advice every seller has been given for twenty years. "Paint it all greige and get out of the way" is no longer the highest-scoring strategy.
- The downside is far larger than the upside. The best color in the best room bought you about $2,300. The worst color in the worst room cost nearly $8,000 — more than three times as much. Avoiding a mistake matters more than landing the trend.
- Sage green was the only color that never lost. It was the single shade ranking top-tier in every room tested. If you want one color and no thinking, that is the answer.
This is stated preference research — people looking at pictures and saying what they would pay. It is not a study of what homes actually closed for. Real closings are driven by condition, location, floor plan and the loan the buyer qualified for, and paint color is a small term in that equation.
What the study genuinely proves is the direction and the relative size of the effect: warm and deep currently read as current, saturated primaries read as a project, and the penalty for getting it wrong is much bigger than the reward for getting it right. That is enough to make good decisions with. Treat the exact dollar figures as directional.
The five 2026 colors I would actually use on a Huntsville house
National trend lists are written for a house that does not exist anywhere. Madison County has its own constraints: an enormous amount of red and orange brick, west-facing elevations that take a beating from June through September, and a lot of 1960s and 1970s ranch stock where the brick is staying whether you like it or not. These are the picks that survive contact with that reality.
| Color | Code | Where I would use it | Why it works here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal Khaki | SW 6150 | Whole-house interior neutral | Warm enough to sit beside orange-toned brick and oak floors without going pink. The safest 2026 neutral for a Huntsville ranch. |
| Hidden Gem | N430-6A | Kitchen island, built-ins, powder room | Behr's own guidance is that it holds up against red brick in full sun. At LRV 14 it is a color for cabinetry and one wall, not a whole room. |
| Silhouette | AF-655 | Front door, shutters, exterior trim | A near-black brown that does what black does on a brick ranch without the harshness. Reads as intentional at the curb. |
| Liveable Green | SW 6176 | Bathrooms, guest rooms, whole house if you want zero risk | The only color in the Zillow data that scored top-tier in every single room. |
| Cloud Dancer / Swiss Coffee | 11-4201 / OC-45 | Trim, ceilings, cabinets | Huntsville's afternoon light is warm. Stark white trim goes blue-gray in it. A warm white does not. |
The pairing I would put money on for a 2026 listing: Universal Khaki on the walls, a warm white on the trim, and exactly one room — the powder room, the office, the primary — in Hidden Gem or a deep green. That gives a buyer something to remember without giving them something to repaint.
Exterior color in Huntsville: brick, sun and the historic districts
Your brick already made most of the decision
The single most common exterior mistake I see here is choosing a color from a fan deck indoors and then discovering it fights the brick. Huntsville brick skews red and orange, which pushes cool grays and blue-based whites toward looking dirty. Warm greiges, deep greens, and near-blacks in the Silhouette family all sit comfortably next to it. Test any exterior color by painting a two-foot square directly on the house, next to the brick, and looking at it at 8 a.m., noon and 6 p.m.
West-facing walls fade faster than you think
North Alabama summers are long, humid and bright. Deep saturated exterior colors on a west or south elevation will visibly shift within a few years unless you are using a premium exterior line with good UV package. If you are going dark outside, that is the place to spend the extra $15 a gallon, not the place to save it.
If you live in a historic district, color is a permitting question
Huntsville has four locally designated historic districts — Twickenham, Old Town, Five Points and Alabama A&M University. Per the City of Huntsville, all properties within those districts are subject to design review by the Historic Preservation Commission for exterior changes to structures or properties, prior to issuance of a Certificate of Appropriateness or building permit.
- The Commission meets on the second Monday of each month.
- Applications are due on or before the last Monday of the preceding month — roughly two weeks of lead time.
- The Historic Preservation Office is on the 4th floor of City Hall, 305 Fountain Circle. Phone 256-650-4779.
The City's published description covers "exterior changes" broadly and does not spell out whether a like-for-like repaint in a different color needs its own Certificate of Appropriateness. That is exactly the kind of question the Preservation Office answers in a two-minute phone call — and exactly the kind of question that is expensive to get wrong after the crew has sprayed the whole front elevation.
The same logic applies in newer subdivisions. Village of Providence, Clift Farm, Hays Farm and most HOA neighborhoods run architectural review on exterior color. Get the approval in writing before the deposit.
The 5 best painting companies in Huntsville, AL
This is assembled from public records — Better Business Bureau accreditation status and rating, verified years in business, ownership, and each company's own published scope of work. Nobody paid for placement and no referral arrangement sits behind any name on it.
All details were verified in August 2026. Ratings, ownership and hours change. Confirm current licensing, insurance and reviews before you sign anything.
| Company | In business | BBB | Best for | Phone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shattuck Painting | Since 1973 (53 yrs) | A+, accredited 2017 | Large or complex jobs, commercial-grade finishes | (256) 539-4433 |
| Woods Painting & Home Improvements | Since 1985 (41 yrs) | A+, accredited 2017 | Paint plus the carpentry and drywall that comes with it | (256) 417-7492 |
| CertaPro Painters of Huntsville | National franchise | — | Widest service area, written warranty, cabinet refinishing | (256) 677-4999 |
| Universal Painting & Restoration | — | A+, accredited | Painting bundled with siding and carpentry repair | (256) 508-2847 |
| Luxe Home Painting | Newer, Huntsville-based | A+, accredited | Cabinets and color consultation | (205) 222-2237 |
1. Shattuck Painting — the longest track record in town
Fifty-three years in business, operating locally since 1994, run by David Shattuck out of 2500 Roland Rd SW. A+ with the BBB and accredited since December 2017. The scope is broader than most residential painters: interior and exterior, plus epoxy coatings, vinyl wall coverings, floor treatments and wallpaper removal.
Call them when: the job is big, the surface is unusual, or there is wallpaper involved. Office hours run Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., which tells you this is a crew-scheduling operation rather than a nights-and-weekends outfit — plan your timeline accordingly.
2. Woods Painting & Home Improvements — paint plus the repairs
Doug Woods has run this since 1985 — 41 years. A+ with the BBB, accredited since December 2017, based at 301 Forrest Park Ct NW. Beyond painting they handle drywall, interior and exterior staining, wall texturing and pressure washing.
Call them when: the reason you are painting is that something needs fixing first. Rotten trim, a drywall patch, a texture match — the jobs where a paint-only crew hands you a second contractor to manage. One note: BBB lists payment as cash and check only, so ask about that up front.
3. CertaPro Painters of Huntsville — the widest reach and a written warranty
The national franchise's Huntsville location covers a genuinely large footprint: Athens, Harvest, Madison, Owens Cross Roads, Hampton Cove, McMullen Cove, Brownsboro, Gurley, Guntersville, Laceys Spring, Hazel Green, New Market and Scottsboro. Services run from standard interior and exterior work to cabinet refinishing, brick painting and staining, popcorn ceiling removal, siding painting and power washing.
Call them when: you are outside the city proper and local crews will not drive to you, or when you want a warranty document rather than a handshake. Franchise pricing is usually not the cheapest bid you will get — you are paying for process and paperwork.
4. Universal Painting & Restoration — when it is more than paint
Founded and run by Harold Ogiste, based on Rockwell Rd NW, A+ and BBB accredited. Residential, commercial and industrial work, plus deck staining, carpentry, siding repair, drywall, power washing and epoxy floor coatings.
Call them when: the project spans paint and structure — a garage floor, a deck that needs boards replaced before it is stained, siding that needs repair before it is coated.
5. Luxe Home Painting — cabinets and color help
The newest name on this list and the most relevant to everything above it. Co-founded by Levi, who spent six years at Sherwin-Williams before starting the company, and Elise, a Huntsville local handling design and media. A+ and BBB accredited. Interior, exterior, cabinet painting and color consultation.
Call them when: you have read this entire article and still cannot decide, or when the job is kitchen cabinets — which is a genuinely different skill from walls and is where most cheap bids go wrong. They are early-stage, so ask for recent local references and photos of finished cabinet work.
Honorable mention
G & G Painting — A+ and BBB accredited since November 2024, in business since 2016, owned by Andrea Garcia. Commercial painting, minor repairs, drywall, siding and pressure washing. Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. — the widest hours of any company here. (256) 684-9962.

The Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board requires a residential home builder license for the "construction, remodeling, repair, improvement, or reimprovement of a residential structure where the cost of the undertaking including labor and materials exceeds $10,000."
The Board's published FAQ does not call out painting on its own, so whether a large repaint crosses that line is a question for the Board, not for a blog. If your project is anywhere near that number, ask the contractor directly what license they hold and verify it with the Board before work starts. Ask for a certificate of insurance naming you, too — every time, regardless of price.
How to hire a painter in Huntsville without getting burned
The bids you get on the same job will vary by two to three times. That spread is almost never about the paint. It is about prep, crew, and whether the low bid included the things you assumed were included.
Nine questions to ask every bidder
- What prep is in this number? Washing, scraping, caulking, priming bare spots, patching nail holes. Get it itemized. This is where cheap bids get cheap.
- How many coats, and what happens if coverage is short? One coat over a color change is not enough. Get the number in writing.
- Which product and which line? "Sherwin-Williams" is not an answer. SuperPaint and Emerald are both Sherwin-Williams and they are not the same paint.
- Who is actually on my property? Employees or subcontractors, and is the crew the same all week?
- Certificate of insurance, naming me. General liability and workers' comp. Ask for the document, not the reassurance.
- What license do you hold? Especially if the total is near or over $10,000.
- What is the warranty, in writing, and what voids it?
- What is the payment schedule? A deposit is normal. A large deposit before any material arrives is not.
- Two references from the last 90 days, in this metro. Recent and local, not a decade-old testimonial.
Red flags
- A price quoted without walking the property, or from photos alone on a whole-house job.
- Pressure to sign today, or a discount that expires at the end of the visit.
- No written scope — just a total.
- Cash-only with a large up-front deposit. (Cash-preferred on final payment is common and fine; a big cash deposit is not.)
- No verifiable business address or license number.
- A bid dramatically below the other two. Something was left out, and it is usually prep.
Should you paint before you list your Huntsville home?
Usually yes, and usually less than you think.
The Madison County median sale price sat around $349,000 in mid-2026. Against that, a full interior repaint of the main living areas runs a few thousand dollars and an exterior repaint on a typical 2,000 sq ft home lands somewhere between $2,300 and $5,500. Those are real numbers, not rounding errors, and paint does not create value out of thin air.
What paint does is remove objections. A buyer who walks into a house with scuffed hallways and a bold accent wall starts building a mental repair list, and that list is always more expensive in their head than in reality. A buyer who walks into clean, current, neutral walls has nothing to subtract for. In a market where inventory has loosened up, the house with nothing to subtract for is the one that gets the offer.
Where I would actually spend it
- Trim and doors first. Cheapest square footage on the property and the thing that reads as "maintained" faster than anything else.
- Any room with a color a buyer would have to undo. The teal dining room, the red bathroom, the child's room in three colors. Per the resale research, these are where the money leaks out.
- The front door. A gallon and an afternoon. It is the single highest-visibility square footage you own.
- Kitchen cabinets — but only professionally. Well-done cabinet paint transforms a kitchen. Badly done cabinet paint is worse than dated wood, and buyers can tell in about four seconds.
- Whole-house exterior — only if it needs it. If the existing paint is sound, wash it and spend the money elsewhere.
Fresh paint everywhere makes some buyers wonder what you covered up, and it guarantees the smell is still there at the first showing. Three to four weeks ahead is the sweet spot — long enough to air out, close enough that nothing gets scuffed before photos.
Text me photos of the rooms you are thinking about and tell me whether you are staying or selling. I will send back specific colors with codes, the order I would do them in, and an honest read on which ones are worth paying for. No charge, no obligation, and I will tell you if the answer is "do not bother."

Frequently asked questions
What is the 2026 color of the year?
There is no single answer — each manufacturer names its own. Sherwin-Williams chose Universal Khaki SW 6150, a warm mid-tone neutral. Benjamin Moore chose Silhouette AF-655, a burnt-umber near-black. Behr chose Hidden Gem N430-6A, a smoky jade green. Valspar chose Warm Eucalyptus 8004-28F, PPG chose Secret Safari PPG1110-4, Glidden chose Warm Mahogany PPG1060-7, and Pantone — which covers all design, not just paint — chose Cloud Dancer 11-4201, a soft white.
What paint color adds the most value when selling a house?
In Zillow's 2026 buyer research, a chocolate-brown bedroom carried the largest premium at about $2,277 over white, followed by a pale blue living room at roughly $1,723 and a charcoal-gray kitchen at about $1,373. Sage green was the only color that ranked in the top tier for every room tested, which makes it the lowest-risk choice if you want one color for the whole house.
What paint color hurts a home sale the most?
Bold red in a bathroom performed worst in the Zillow research, associated with roughly $7,971 less in what buyers said they would pay. Blush pink in a bathroom was next at about $6,013 less. Ochre yellow ranked near the bottom in every room. The penalty for a bad color is roughly three times larger than the reward for a good one.
How much does it cost to paint a house in Huntsville, AL?
Local estimates put labor at about $1.10 to $2.70 per square foot, interior or exterior, with materials billed separately. A 2,000 sq ft exterior typically lands between $2,300 and $5,500. A standard 12 x 14 bedroom runs about $700 to $1,700 in labor. Get three bids — the spread on identical work is routinely two to three times.
Who are the best painters in Huntsville, Alabama?
Based on BBB accreditation, verified years in business and published scope of work as of August 2026: Shattuck Painting (in business since 1973), Woods Painting & Home Improvements (since 1985), CertaPro Painters of Huntsville, Universal Painting & Restoration, and Luxe Home Painting. All five hold an A+ BBB rating or are BBB accredited. Verify current licensing, insurance and reviews before hiring.
Do I need approval to paint my house in a Huntsville historic district?
Very likely. Huntsville has four locally designated historic districts — Twickenham, Old Town, Five Points and Alabama A&M University — and the City states that all properties within them are subject to design review by the Historic Preservation Commission for exterior changes, prior to a Certificate of Appropriateness or building permit. The Commission meets the second Monday of each month with applications due the last Monday of the month before. Call the Historic Preservation Office at 256-650-4779 before you buy paint.
Does a painter need a license in Alabama?
The Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board requires a residential home builder license when the cost of construction, remodeling, repair or improvement of a residential structure exceeds $10,000 including labor and materials. The Board's FAQ does not address painting on its own, so ask the contractor what license they hold and verify it with the Board directly if your project is near that threshold. Ask for a certificate of insurance regardless of price.
What paint colors work best with red brick?
Warm neutrals and deep greens. Red and orange brick pushes cool grays and blue-based whites toward looking dirty, which is why so much of Huntsville's 1960s and 1970s ranch stock looks off with a gray trim color. Universal Khaki SW 6150, warm whites like Swiss Coffee OC-45, and near-blacks like Silhouette AF-655 all sit comfortably against brick. Behr specifically notes that Hidden Gem holds up next to red brick in sunlight.
Should I paint before selling or offer a credit instead?
Paint it. A credit asks the buyer to imagine the finished result and do the work themselves, and they will always price that inconvenience higher than the job actually costs. Paint is one of the few improvements where doing the work yourself is cheaper than the discount a buyer will demand for not doing it.
How long before listing should I paint?
Three to four weeks. Long enough for the smell to clear and for you to catch touch-ups, close enough that walls do not get scuffed before photography. Painting the week of listing means your first showings smell like a paint store and your photos may catch fresh damage.
