Your First 30 Days in Huntsville: Utilities, DMV, Vehicle Registration and Everything Else

Quick answer: Alabama gives you 30 days for both the big legal items. You must obtain an Alabama driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency (Ala. Code § 32-6-1), and you must register your vehicle within 30 days of it entering the state (Ala. Code § 40-12-262). Everything else — utilities, trash, voter registration, homestead exemption — can follow, but the homestead filing is the one people forget and it costs real money.

Here is the order I give relocating clients, roughly week by week.

Week one: utilities and the roof over your head

• Electric, water and gas. Huntsville Utilities serves the City of Huntsville and surrounding areas for electric, water and natural gas. Outside the city, service may come from Madison Utilities, Limestone County Water or an electric cooperative — ask at closing which provider covers your specific address, because it is not always the obvious one.
• Internet. Availability varies more by street than newcomers expect, particularly on Monte Sano and the east side where terrain interferes. If you work from home even part-time, confirm service at the exact address before you close, not at the neighborhood level.
• Trash and recycling. Handled by your municipality, and pickup days differ between Huntsville, Madison and unincorporated county addresses.
• Mail forwarding. USPS change of address, plus a separate note to your bank, brokerage and the VA or your agency HR if applicable.

Weeks one to four: the 30-day legal clock

Weeks two to six: the money items people forget

1. File your homestead exemption. It is not automatic. File with the Madison County or Limestone County tax office after closing. Miss it and you overpay in year one. If you are 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled, look specifically at H-3, which can be a complete property tax exemption.
2. Update your auto insurance to Alabama before you register. Most carriers will not issue a tag-ready policy retroactively.
3. Update your homeowners policy and while you are at it, get the roof age documented. North Alabama hail and wind claims affect premiums more than in low-risk markets.
4. Register to vote. Madison County Board of Registrars, or Limestone County if that is your side of the line.
5. Find a doctor and a dentist before you need one. Huntsville Hospital Health System is the dominant provider and new-patient waits are real. Do it in month one, not month six.
6. School records. If you are a military family, Alabama belongs to the Military Interstate Children's Compact (MIC3), which protects enrollment, records transfer, course placement and graduation requirements on a mid-year move. Getting oriented: the geography that will confuse you

Month one: actually enjoy the place

The families who settle in fastest are the ones who do something non-logistical in the first three weeks. A few that consistently work:

• The U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Obvious, and still worth it. The Saturn V alone is worth the trip.
• Big Spring International Park downtown, then walk to lunch.
• Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment — one of the largest privately owned arts facilities in the country, and the single best "oh, this town is interesting" moment for a skeptical spouse.
• Monte Sano State Park for the overlook and the trails.
