Roughly 44,000 people go on and off Redstone Arsenal every day, and the Army manages that with gates that open, close, and change direction on a schedule. If you are moving here for a job on post, the gate you will use matters more than almost anything else about where you buy. A house six miles from the fence on the wrong gate loses to a house twelve miles out on the right one. This is the guide I wish every relocating family read before they started looking at listings.

Every Redstone Arsenal gate, with current hours

These are the hours published by the Redstone Arsenal Directorate of Emergency Services as of July 21, 2026. Gate 3 was cut to a three-hour morning window on July 10 because of guard-force staffing, and the Arsenal has said the other gates are unaffected. Hours change; the official page is linked at the bottom and is worth bookmarking.

Rules of thumb. Shift work or on-call = live on the Gate 9 side. East side = day shift only. Never plan around Gate 3. All gates except 9 and 8 close on federal holidays. First visit without a CAC: Gate 9 Visitor Control Center, 7 a.m.–3 p.m. weekdays, REAL ID required.

What those hours actually mean for where you live

Read the table again and three things jump out.

1. Only Gate 9 is always open

If you work anything other than a standard weekday day shift — nights, rotating shifts, weekends, early reports, late departures, on-call — you are a Gate 9 commuter, full stop. Gate 9 sits on the northwest corner of the installation off Rideout Road, near I-565 and Research Park. That single fact shrinks a shift worker's map to west Huntsville, Research Park, Providence, Madison, Hays Farm and south Huntsville. Everything on the east side of Memorial Parkway gets a lot less convenient at 10 p.m.

2. Martin Road flips direction at 1:30 p.m.

Gates 1 and 7 are the natural entrances for the east and south sides — Jones Valley, Blossomwood, Monte Sano, Hampton Cove, and the Zierdt Road corridor on the west end. They work beautifully for a day shift: in before 1:30, out any time until 9. But if you need to enter after 1:30 p.m. — a split day, a dentist appointment, picking a kid up and coming back — you are driving around to Gate 9 or Gate 10. Families on the east side learn this the hard way in the first month.

3. Gate 3 is a three-hour gate now

Redstone Road on the south side used to be a reasonable option for south Huntsville. Since July 2026 it is open 6 to 9 a.m. and nothing else. It is fine for an early day shift; it is not a gate you can plan a household around. If a listing agent tells you a south Huntsville house is "right by Gate 3," ask what time they get to work.

The one question to answer before you look at a single house: what are your actual hours, and how often will they change? A day-shift GS employee and a rotating-shift contractor should not be looking at the same neighborhoods, even with the same budget.

Which neighborhoods feed which gate

Drive times below are typical door-to-gate on a normal weekday morning. Traffic on Rideout Road and Research Park Boulevard between 7 and 8 a.m. is real and can add ten minutes to the top of these ranges.

Two patterns worth naming. The west and south side of the metro is the flexible side — Gate 9 is always there. The east side is the beautiful side — mountains, mature trees, the neighborhoods people picture when they think of Huntsville — and it runs on Gate 1's schedule. Neither is wrong. Buying east for a shift-work job is.

Three mistakes I see relocating families make

Buying east for a job that isn't a day shift. Hampton Cove and Monte Sano are gorgeous. If your badge says "rotating," they are also a nightly detour to Gate 9. Ask about the schedule before the showing, not after the inspection.

Trusting the listing's commute claim. "Ten minutes to the Arsenal" is measured to the fence line on Google Maps at 2 p.m. on a Sunday. Measure to your gate at your report time. Better: drive it once during a house-hunting trip. We build that into every relocation tour we run.

Forgetting the first visit is different. Until you have a CAC or a sponsor, you go through the Visitor Control Center at Gate 9, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, REAL ID in hand. If your first day on post is a Monday morning report, plan the visitor pass for the week before.

Common questions

Which Redstone Arsenal gate is open 24 hours?

Only Gate 9 on Rideout Road, on the northwest side of the installation near I-565. It is open every day including federal holidays, and it is where the Visitor Control Center is located.

What are the Gate 10 hours at Redstone Arsenal?

Gate 10 on Patton Road is open to vehicles 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and closed on federal holidays. It is the natural gate for downtown, Five Points and the Medical District.

Why can't I get in Gate 1 in the afternoon?

Gates 1 and 7 on Martin Road allow traffic in both directions from 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., then switch to outbound only from 1:30 to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays. To enter after 1:30 p.m. you use Gate 9 or Gate 10.

Is Gate 3 at Redstone Arsenal open?

Yes, but only from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. The Arsenal reduced Gate 3 to a morning-only window on July 10, 2026, citing guard-force staffing. It is closed the rest of the day and on weekends and federal holidays.

Which neighborhoods are best for shift workers at Redstone Arsenal?

Neighborhoods on the Gate 9 side: Hays Farm and south Huntsville, Providence and Research Park, Madison, and the west side generally. Those areas keep a 24-hour gate within about 5 to 25 minutes. East-side neighborhoods like Jones Valley, Monte Sano and Hampton Cove depend on Gate 1, which only allows inbound traffic until 1:30 p.m.

How do visitors get onto Redstone Arsenal?

Visitors without Department of Defense credentials go through the Visitor Control Center at Gate 9, open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed federal holidays. Everyone 18 and older is vetted, and the installation enforces the REAL ID Act.
